Dr Elaine Callinan presents to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment

Lecturer in Modern Irish History at Carlow College, St. Patrick’s, Dr Elaine Callinan, delivered a paper yesterday (9 November) on the propaganda of the 1918 General Election in Ireland at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment as part of the Decade of Centenaries programme.

Dr Elaine Callinan has published her book ‘Electioneering and Propaganda in Ireland, 1917-21. Votes, Violence and Victory‘ in 2020.

The book provides an illuminating and unique analysis of the political rivalry between all the major parties during Ireland’s revolutionary years. Politicians, propagandists and their voluntary supporters instigated forceful election campaigns to promote ideologies and influence the minds of ordinary people. The goal was victory at the ballot box during the by-elections, general elections and local government elections of this era.

John Kelly, Principal Officer & Chief Labour Inspector, Workplace Relations Commission; Secretary General of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment in Ireland, Dr Orlaigh Quinn; Dr Elaine Callinan, Lecturer in Modern Irish History, Carlow College; and, Dr Dr. Alan Power, Assistant Principal/Senior Policy Analyst, Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
