The College Sustainability Group kicked off its events programme this week with a hands‑on Ecology Workshop, make an eco-system in a jar. The session opened with Dr. Penny Humby giving an introduction to how ecosystems work, covering how light, nutrients, water cycles, and the role of decomposers in keeping and ecosystem productive.
After the short talk, everyone got stuck into building their own ecosystem in a jar. Using layers of gravel, soil, moss, small plants, and optional helpers like isopods or springtails, participants created miniature closed habitats designed to balance themselves over time.
The workshop wrapped up with a few practical tips — keep the jar in bright but indirect light, watch condensation, and let the system find its own balance.
This is the first of the Sustainability Group’s workshop, but there will be more activities and information sessions over the next semester.
