The part-time Certificate in International Human Rights introduces students to the main ideas and tools used in Human Rights theory. It covers important human rights documents, like articles, declarations, and conventions, using real-world examples. The course aims to develop students’ critical thinking and their ability to create well-structured arguments by focusing on rights-based issues.

Students will learn to look at global problems, such as colonialism and development, through the lens of human rights. They will improve their writing, speaking, presentation, and digital skills, and learn to analyze both qualitative and quantitative data to support their arguments effectively.

Course Practicalities

Course will be delivered on Saturday mornings from 9.30am – 11.30am online with five classes over 10 weeks, supported by self-directed online learning and an on-campus workshop during the semester. Classes scheduled for 20th September, 4th October, 18th October, 8th November and 22nd November. On-campus workshop date TBC.

Assessment

Learners will be assessed via the presentation of a facilitation plan and written plan outline, as well as a 1,250-1,500 word essay.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be resident in Ireland and at least 18 years old at course commencement, in accordance with Carlow College Admission Guidelines and Procedures for Part-Time Learners

Fees

Course fees are €360 including Protection of Enrolled Learner (PEL) and payable at registration.
