Carlow College, in collaboration with Carlow Traveller Forum, marked Traveller Ethnicity Day with a special poetry reading event. Hosted by SPCS Community Art students and Carlow Traveller Forum, the event provided a platform to share and celebrate Traveller culture and identity.
As part of the celebration, members of the Carlow Traveller Forum shared their poetry, highlighting their experiences, heritage, and pride in their community. Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Lecturer in Community Studies, Agnita Kenny the event acknowledged an important milestone:
“The Carlow Traveller Forum and Carlow College SPCS Community Art students hosted a poetry reading by Forum members to mark the eight-year anniversary of the Government formally recognising the distinct culture and heritage of the Irish Traveller community on 1st March 2017.”
The event fostered meaningful discussions about the importance of representation, cultural pride, and the role of the arts in preserving and sharing Traveller heritage.
