My pathway to third level

Upon completing my secondary school education, I found myself uncertain about the specific career path I should pursue. A friend of mine, who had been accepted as a mature student at Carlow College, recommended the college to me, leading me to select it as my top CAO choice.

Skills development for future career path

The BA in Humanities degree has significantly contributed to my professional development; it imparts essential skills ranging from critical thinking to situational analysis. This course has equipped me with a diverse and expansive mindset, enabling me to adapt to various circumstances and approach challenges with a diplomatic perspective.

I found numerous elements of the course to be exceptional, particularly the diverse array of subjects offered and the outstanding quality of the lecturers. The support I received at Carlow College was truly remarkable.

My education at Carlow College has significantly developed the skills I apply daily in my professional life, including my abilities in influence, negotiation, and strategic change management. Courses such as Philosophy have profoundly influenced my thought processes and my approach to various challenges. In my current role, philosophy has been a great subject matter with the French diplomats.

My current career path

My current role is at the Irish Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, serving as the Vice Consul within the consular section. My responsibilities are diverse; I act as the primary liaison for Irish citizens facing issues such as arrest, death, or other serious concerns. Additionally, I collaborate closely with the Irish diaspora to foster connections between South Africa and Ireland. My role involves engaging with various diplomats from other countries to establish strong relationships regarding consular issues that may emerge.

In September 2024, I will be returning to headquarters to assume a new position in HR within the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Fondest memories of Carlow College

I really enjoyed my time at Carlow College; it was a blast! I made sure to embrace every moment of my college experience. Looking back, I might have had a bit too much fun  – I could have focused more on my studies.
