SDG Goals

Carlow College is dedicated to sustainability and biodiversity. We are committed to aligning our sustainability efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our campus-wide initiatives promote environmental responsibility, biodiversity, and climate action through practical and measurable actions. Below is a list of some of the measures Carlow College has put in place with the college and on campus to support a biodiverse and sustainable environment.

We place particular focus on SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 – Climate Action, and SDG 15 – Life on Land. These goals guide us in reducing our environmental impact through sustainable resource use, proactive climate measures, and the protection and restoration of terrestrial ecosystems. By addressing consumption habits, promoting biodiversity, and fostering climate resilience, we ensure our campus is both environmentally conscious and ecologically vibrant.
We follow these SDG principles by implementing the initiatives below:

Biodiversity and Wildlife Protection

Hedge Cutting (Mar – Aug.)
In compliance with Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, we ensure that hedge cutting is avoided during the bird nesting season to protect local wildlife.

No Mow May
To promote wildflower growth and support pollinators, we participate in the No Mow May initiative by refraining from cutting grass in designated areas during the month of May.

Bee Hive
Our college orchard is home to a beehive, supporting local bee populations and enhancing biodiversity on campus.

Nesting Boxes for Swifts
Recognising the endangered status of swifts, we have installed nesting boxes on the South Wing to provide them with safe habitats.

Composting
To reduce organic waste and enrich our campus ecosystem, we maintain composting mounds throughout the grounds. Grass clippings, leaves, and plant trimmings are repurposed into mulch and nutrient-rich soil. These compost areas support healthy plant growth and demonstrate our commitment to sustainable land management. (Locations marked on campus map.)

Insect Houses
To provide shelter for beneficial insects such as ladybirds, solitary bees, and lacewings, we have installed insect houses in key green areas. These structures support pollination and natural pest control, helping to balance the local ecosystem.
1 Insect House is currently in place, with more to be added as part of our ongoing biodiversity initiative.

Energy Conservation

Boilers
We have replaced outdated boilers with more energy-efficient models to reduce our overall energy consumption.

Accommodation
Windows in our student accommodations have been upgraded to double glazing, significantly improving energy efficiency.

Sensor Lighting
Sensor lighting has been installed in select areas of the campus, ensuring that lights are only on when needed and thus conserving energy.

Water Conservation

Bathrooms
We have upgraded taps and toilet cisterns in our bathrooms to reduce water consumption and improve efficiency.

Water Monitoring
Amount of usage noted, we are monitoring water usage with the intention to reduce consumption

Environmental Education & Community Involvement

Educational Initiatives
We engage our students and staff in environmental education through workshops, seminars, and hands-on activities that promote sustainability practices.

Community Projects
Carlow College actively participates in local environmental projects, fostering a sense of community responsibility and collaboration.
