Oonagh Kearney, the Carlow Writer in Residence, got her troupe of writers to present new work generated in the Carlow College, St Patrick’s ‘Writing Room’ over her four month residency during the Sharing Writing as a Visual Choreography event on Wednesday 8th May. The work was given a dramatic delivery in the grounds of Carlow College, St Patrick’s and the galleries of VISUAL. This staged presentation saw the writers act out dramatic scenes and present their poems and short stories in a choreographed, interlinked arc that flowed around different spaces with a loose connecting narrative. For the seasoned practitioner to the apprentice or novice writer, there was something exciting to be learned from this dynamic presentation. This event was Oonagh’s farewell presentation as she makes way for the new writer in residence, dramatist Darren Donoghue. And this dramatic presentation was the perfect handover cue.
‘It is exhilarating to see work that was produced in the sessions Oonagh conducted in the College writing room come so vividly alive. What a rewarding experience. It is amazing how writing can be experienced in one way on the page, and then it is another experience altogether as it is brought dramatically alive’ said Dr Derek Coyle, English Lecturer at Carlow College and regular attendee of the ‘Writing Room’.
