Carlow College, St Patrick’s are pleased to be hosting an important public seminar in an expression of solidarity with the Rohinyga community in Carlow and internationally. This seminar will take place on Tuesday, 10 April 2018, from 6pm-8pm in Cobden Hall.

The seminar will focus on the topic of genocide, human rights and international humanitarian responses/failures in Myanmar and Sri Lanka, with specific reference to the role of the United Nations. According to the UN’s own reports it is due to ‘a system failure’. How can the UN stop such crimes when it is fully dominated by the world’s major military powers? Is it a system failure or a failed system?

Denis Halliday, the former UN assistant secretary general who resigned from his post will address the meeting whilst calling for democratisation of the UN system. He will be joined by Maung Zarni (Myanmar) and Jude Lal Fernando ( Sri Lanka), two exiled scholar/activists, in demonstrating how the mass atrocities committed against the Rohingya people and Eelam Tamils in their countries respectively have to be called genocide.
