Course Overview
The Certificate in Pedagogy in Politics & Society is delivered over a two-day practical workshop to upskill post-primary teachers on the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching Politics and Society for Leaving Cert. .
Participants will explore different teaching methods, with a focus on a Freirean approach, which encourages critical thinking and understanding of the ideas and processes behind the Politics and Society syllabus. The course aims to prepare teachers to handle difficult classroom situations and encourages a classroom environment focused on inquiry, where teachers guide discussions and challenge students to think critically.
The course highlights the role of critical thinking in education, emphasizing that it can drive social change. It also focuses on helping teachers empower their students to become active agents of change. Participants will learn to see their own power as educators and develop reflective practices that bring theory and action together in the Politics and Society classroom.
The course runs over two days and includes:
- Workshop 1: Strategies for Teaching Politics and Society
- Workshop 2: Applying Theory to Practice – Creating the E-Portfolio

Course Practicalities
Course will be delivered over a two-day workshop on-campus in Carlow College, St. Patrick’s on 1st & 2nd November 2024.
Course Content
The course content is broken into six themes
- Introduction: Sociology of Education
- Introduction to Pedagogy
- Freirean Pedagogy
- Reflective Practice
- The Politics & Society Classroom
- Teaching and Learning Strategies for Politics & Society
Assessment
Learners will be assessed via an online quiz, design of a qualitative survey and questionnaire and the preparation of an e-Portfolio.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be resident in Ireland and at least 18 years old at course commencement.
