The Basics

Ireland is predominantly English-speaking country.  

However, in county such as Galway, Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Mayo, Meath and Donegal there are areas where the Irish language, is used more frequently. There is also a vibrant Irish-language culture in Carlow.

The Euro (denoted by € or EUR) is the unit of currency in Ireland. One Euro is equal to one hundred cents. 

Currency exchange services are available at banks, post offices and credit unions.

To open a bank account in Ireland the following documentation is required: 

  • Passport/ driver’s license/ national I.D.  
  • Proof of home address such as a bank statement/ utility bill. 
  • Proof of Irish address which can be confirmed by the College. 

 

Setting up an Irish bank account can be accomplished in person at the bank, or many offer an online service which can be completed on your phone or computer.  

Advice on foreign currency exchange can be provided on request. It is advisable to have contact details for your home bank account while in Ireland, in case you need to get in touch. All major credit and debit cards are accepted throughout Ireland. 

Banks located in Carlow town:

Ireland uses a different electrical outlet and voltage than other European countries. If you intend to bring any electrical goods, buying an adapter before trip is recommended. Ensure the voltage is 220V AC at 50Hz, which is the standard in Ireland. Standard plugs in Ireland have 3-pins.  

The climate in Ireland tends to be mild and temperate, though rainy, for most of the year. Temperature extremes in summer and winter are rare but not completely unheard of. The term ‘four seasons in one day’ can be said of Ireland, meaning that the weather here can be changeable and unpredictable. It is a good idea to purchase an umbrella and either bring/buy a waterproof jacket/coat, suitably warm clothing and footwear.
