Carlow College marked International Women’s Day on 6th March with a vibrant programme of events celebrating women’s achievements and advocating for change. Students and staff came together to honour the day’s theme, Accelerate Action, through creative and thought-provoking activities.

A striking chalk mural created by students set the tone for the day, visually capturing the spirit of empowerment and progress. Students from our Social Care programme led the design and encouraged others to contribute as they arrived on campus for classes or to attend the College’s Spring Open Day.
The mural, displayed on the main avenue, served as a bold reminder of the importance of accelerating action towards gender equality.
The feature event on the day was a panel discussion coordinated by the Civic Engagement Hub, which explored Female Political Icons, shining a light on influential women in politics who have shaped history and continue to inspire future generations.
Chaired by Michael Sherman, lecturers Dr Sarah Otten, Steph Hanlon and Agnita Kenny sparked engaging conversations about leadership, representation, and the challenges faced by women in political spheres.
Poetry readings by students in the Carlovian Dining Hall added a creative and reflective dimension to the day, with original and published works celebrating women’s voices and experiences. Meanwhile, the College library featured a special book display showcasing works by female authors, highlighting their contributions to literature and academia.
Commenting on the International Women’s Day celebrations, Michael Sherman, Chair of the Civic Engagement Hub said: “We have a strong tradition of celebrating IWD at Carlow College, St Patrick’s. It was great to see our students and visitors to our Spring Open Day visitors take part in the range of events on offer to celebrate International Women’s Day. I’m proud to work in a college that celebrates Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in so many diverse and creative ways. It is becoming increasingly important that we continue to promote our values and principles in a deliberate and courageous way.”
Carlow College’s International Women’s Day celebrations provided a platform for expression, discussion, and inspiration, reinforcing the ongoing need for action in achieving gender equality.
