Dr Ida Milne and Dr Elaine Callinan take part in ‘Decade of Centuries’ Video Series
Two of Carlow College’s history lecturers we delighted to take part in Carlow County Council Community Information Decade of centuries video series in the past week. Decade of centuries is a commemoration programme organised by the State, to remember the importance and impact of what happened in Irish history a century ago. The idea of this programme is to look at events from this time, including the Struggle for Independence, the Civil War, the Foundation of the State and Partition, and to ensure these events are remembered respectfully and with sensitivity.
A main objective of the initiative is to promote an understanding of the significant events that took place during this period, and recognise that the shared historical experience of those years gave rise to very different narratives and memories, and the Ireland we live in today.
Two of our history lecturers, Dr Ida Milne and Dr Elaine Callinan took part in this video series, each talking about their specific speciality, which relates to this time in our history.
In the first episiode of this series, Carlow College Lecturer in European History, Dr. Ida Milne spoke with Genealogist Bernie Walsh of Carlow Libraries about the impact of the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic on Carlow & beyond. Dr Milne examines the experiences of the population in and around Co. Carlow, during the pandemic and also puts the responses and attitudes to the Covid pandemic in 21st Century context.
In another episode, Lecturer in History, Dr Elaine Callinan, spoke to John Kelly (of Carlow Historical and Archaeological Society) giving a fascinating insight in the 1918 General Election in Ireland. The 1918 Election is seen as one of the most significant election in the history of Irish politics, as it saw the Irish Parliamentary Party replaced by revolutionary Sinn Féin as the most popular political movement in the country. In this video Dr. Elaine Callinan, lecturer in History at Carlow College, St. Patrick’s discusses this watershed event in Co. Carlow and beyond.
Carlow College has a long tradition of teaching history in our college.
