Gender and Race in Higher Education: Good practice and competing inequalities

This is a collaborative project between Carlow College, St. Patrick’s and Institute of Technology Carlow – A symposium on Gender and Race in Higher Education: Good practice and competing inequalities. This will be followed by the launch of a practical Guide to Good Practice on the 10th of June 2021.
Speaker: Professor Kalwant Bhopal, Director of the Centre for Research in Race & Education, University of Birmingham.
Women and Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups are significantly under-represented in higher education senior decision-making roles. In the UK, while two ‘Charter’ schemes have been introduced to address the situation: the Athena SWAN Charter (ASC) and the Race Equality Charter (REC), there remain challenges. This symposium will identify and explore BME experiences in higher education with attention to key findings from Professor Bhopal’s research as well as identifying good practice. The symposium will further consider the challenges of supporting intersectionality, taking into account competing inequalities with regard to gender and race in higher education institutions.
The presentation will be followed by a Q & A session and thereafter a facilitated discussion which will focus on analysing the relevance of this discussion to the Irish context.
