Fr Conn Ó Maoldhomhnaigh leads ‘Symbolic’ Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Ceremony

Fr Conn Ó Maoldhomhnaigh, the 20th President of Carlow College, St. Patrick’s who is a strong advocate for the Rohingya community, plays a crucial role in the Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day held at Carlow College, St. Patrick’s on August 25.

He provided the college ground and led the remembrance ceremony to honour victims and survivors of genocide who have lost their lives, who were being raped and uprooted during the Myanmar Military’s campaign of genocide in nothern Rakhine State.

To celebrate the cultural identity of Rohingya, Fr Conn raised the Rohingya flag in front of the college which brought joy and tear to the Rohingya community resettled in Carlow.

“The flag ceremony which is an important part of today. The Pope came to Ireland this morning, and usually for occasion like that we have the national flag and the Papal flag flying for two days. When it was said to me we should raise the Rohingya flag, I had no difficulty in saying that we have the Papal flag tomorrow and the Rohingya flag today.

“It is deeply symbolic. And the person that would have least objection to that would be Pope Francis,” remarked Fr Conn Ó Maoldhomhnaigh before the flag raising ceremony began.
