These two professors from the College of DuPage, Illonois, USA, will discuss how they combine the insights of the humanities and the natural sciences in their interdisciplinary classroom (environmental biology and film studies) to develop critical literacy around environmental issues. Their class focuses on global food production and consumption practices, drawing on science, literary texts, film and service learning/civic engagement to develop students’ awareness of their involvement in a food system that is socially unjust, destructive to the environment and contributes to climate change. The class also examines ways in which students can be involved in changing that system. The interactive talk will present specific examples from their curriculum and classroom practice.
