Diploma Supplement

The Diploma Supplement was a joint initiative of UNESCO-CEPES, the Council of Europe and the European Commission to recognise, in a transparent way, academic and professional qualifications in ‘States other than in which they were dispensed.’ In 2005 the Ministers for Education from the European Union issued the Berlin Communiqué which stated that ‘every student graduating from 2005 should receive the Diploma Supplement automatically and free of charge. It should be issued in a widely spoken European language.’ It is important to note that the Diploma Supplement is not a curriculum vitae or substitute for the original qualification. However, it is a document for both employers and higher education institutions for qualification assessment.
