We are delighted to welcome Marc-Ivan O’Gorman as our next writer in residence. In partnership with Carlow County Council, Carlow County Library, and the Arts Council of Ireland, Carlow College, St Patrick’s works to deliver the Carlow Writer-in-Residence Programme.
Over the last three years we’ve welcomed to Carlow, and the College, novelists, short story writers, poets, dramatists, film-makers, spoken word artists, and songwriters. For the forthcoming term we welcome Carlow native Marc-Ivan O’Gorman as a dramatist, script-writer and filmmaker.
The workshops for this term will take place from 3.00pm to 5.00pm each Wednesday up to and including the 27th October; and from 1.00pm to 3.00pm each Wednesday from the 3rd November up to the 15th December 2021.

Dramatic Writing Course
In these workshops, we will examine the theory and practice of dramatic writing, focusing on screenwriting but also exploring the formal and technical considerations of writing for theatre, radio and animation. The course will focus on the structural imperatives of dramatic writing while taking into account the production processes of the respective media.
Acknowledging that dramatic writing is a collaborative activity, unlike most other literary forms, attention will be given to the impact of actors, directors, and other technical contributors to the process. Consequently, re-writing will be a key component of the programme.
Weekly assignments will include industry-standard deliverables like log-lines, outlines, treatments and screenplays, concluding with the completion of dramatic monologues suitable for actor performance.
About Marc-Ivan O’Gorman
Marc-Ivan O’Gorman was born and raised in Carlow town, where he has been an active contributor to various arts organizations, including Carlow Little Theatre, the Dolmen Musical Society, the Pure Thinking Group, Taylorfest, and Eigse, the Carlow Arts Festival.
He has taught writing, directing and acting at New York Film Academy and The Studio School, Los Angeles. In Ireland, he has taught extensively at The National Theatre School, the Technological University Dublin, at Liberties College, and the Dundalk Institute of Technology.
He was awarded the Gregory Peck scholarship to attend the New York University, Tisch School screenwriting summer school at University College Dublin, and was selected as an Irish representative for Moonstone International Screenwriters’ Lab in Tours, France, as well as receiving an NYFA grant to study with UCLA School of Theatre, Film & Television.
He has a degree in Film & Broadcasting from Trinity College Dublin and was awarded the Jesuit Film & Video scholarship to undertake the Master Degree program in T.V., Radio and Film from S.I. Newhouse School, Syracuse University, New York.
While at college, his films and plays garnered many awards, including: student BAFTAs, International Playscript Shortlisting, ISDA Awards, MTV European Eye, and Fuji Film Screenplay Awards. His subsequent work includes a feature film, short films, theatre, and radio plays, and these have won numerous national and international prizes, including: Filmbase/RTE Short Film, New York Festivals, Los Angeles Festigious, and Kerry Film Festival awards.
He has worked in various capacities with RTE, Virgin Media, The Abbey Theatre, and Cartoon Saloon. He is currently a director with Tubescience creative agency in Los Angeles and continues to work as a freelance writer and director.
