Carlow College lecturer, Stephanie McDermott, will visit The Hague next week in support of The Rohingya.
The International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, will hold public hearings in the case concerning the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar) from Monday, 21 February to Monday, 28 February 2022, at the Peace Palace in The Hague. The hearings will be devoted to the preliminary objections raised by Myanmar in attempting to defend their human rights abuses and the validity of the accusations of genocidal acts committed by Myanmar on The Rohingya.
This is the second time for Stephanie to visit The Hague in support of The Rohingya, acting in her capacity as secretary to Rohingya Action Ireland and Social Justice and Human Rights Activist. Stephanie will join with delegates and supporters of The Rohingya from all over the world.
Commenting on the case, Stephanie says “The Myanmar Military, perpetrators of genocide and human rights abuses, have to be held accountable for attempting to annihilate The Rohingya, stripping them of citizenship, displacement, banishment, limited access to basic education and health care and of course their genocidal campaign in 2017. It is incumbent upon the international community to support Gambia in their fight for justice for The Rohingya.”
Carlow College have a strong relationship with the 80 Rohingya UNHCR refugees who arrived in Carlow over 10 years ago, the college also works closely with Rohingya Action Ireland and Carlow County Development Partnership.
