Carlow College celebrates International Women’s Day 2024

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2024, Carlow College  hosted an exhibition entitled Elizabeth Corbet Yeats and the Cuala Press. The exhibition has been collated by the Delany Archive.

To launch the exhibition, the College hosted two talks on Tuesday, 5th March which reflected the content and themes of the exhibition:

  • Dr James Heaney spoke about The Cuala Press, W.B. Yeats, and the Irish Revival
  • Dr Elizabeth Dawson spoke about St Brigit: from the medieval to the modern.

International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Celebrated globally on 8th March each year, this day is a great opportunity for everyone to come together to celebrate women’s achievements and raise awareness about women’s equality.

Co-Chairs of the Athena SWAN SAT team in the College, Fiona McGuill and Michael Sherman said: “The College is delighted to host events to celebrate International Women’s Day.  This day affords us the opportunity to promote a culture that is equitable and inclusive for women and to celebrate the achievements of all women, locally, nationally and internationally. As an institute of higher education it is  imperative that every opportunity is utilised to promote a world free of bias and discrimination”.

New Podcast episode: Celebrating Sisterhood

In addition to the exhibition, International Women’s Day was marked with a special podcast episode on the College’s podcast, Would I Be Right in Saying That?, titled “Celebrating Sisterhood”.

In this episode, we discuss the development and impact of Feminism on the modern world with Dr. Sarah Otten, lecturer in Philosophy at Carlow College and ask what is women’s role in society? Why has the Barbie movie caused such a stir? Is the world gendered.

Host of the podcast, student Stewart Quinn is a member of the Feminist Political Thought module in Carlow College.
