Pursuing PME at Hibernia College

Rebecca Gallagher graduated with a BA (Hons) in English and History in 2024 and is currently working as a social care assistant with Western Care before she starts her PME with Hibernia College in 2025.

Favourite Aspect of the Course

I really loved the English aspect. I loved studying English in secondary school and being able to expand my knowledge on famous plays, poets and other modules made it really enjoyable and fun. If you find a course or subject you like, when you study it it’s more enjoyable, it doesn’t feel like you’re just coming in to get a degree you have fun when you learn. I also made life long friends from my course who I will always keep in contact with.

Social Experience

Carlow College is an amazing college, it has great facilities, the staff are so kind and you learn a lot from them. Even though it may be considered a small college in comparison to others, everyone knows each other and you’re always greeted with a smile when you walk through the doors. There’s plenty of support from the staff whether it be the lecturers, councillors or even other students. It has a beautiful library and there are plenty of clubs and societies, and the college itself has a rich history.

Future plans

I’m hoping to be an English and History secondary school teacher and I feel prepared to go ahead with further studies and to teach other young people about the two subjects I feel very passionate about. At the moment, I’m working as a social care assistant with Western Care in County Mayo. I decided to take a year out before I start my PME with Hibernia College in 2025, I feel that working in this sector is of valuable experience as it will give me life skills and will help me going forward in my studies
