Course Overview

The part-time Certificate in International Human Rights introduces students to the main ideas and tools used in Human Rights theory. It covers important human rights documents, like articles, declarations, and conventions, using real-world examples. The course aims to develop students’ critical thinking and their ability to create well-structured arguments by focusing on rights-based issues.

Students will learn to look at global problems, such as colonialism and development, through the lens of human rights. They will improve their writing, speaking, presentation, and digital skills, and learn to analyze both qualitative and quantitative data to support their arguments effectively.

Course Practicalities

Course will be delivered on Saturday mornings from 9.30am – 11.30am online with five classes over 10 weeks, supported by self-directed online learning.

Next course runs from 21st September 2024 with classes on 21/9, 5/10, 19/10, 9/11 and 23/11.

Course Content

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Human Rights Principles
  • Human Rights & Equality
  • Debating Human Rights
  • Examining International Human Rights Instruments
  • Conceptions of Human Rights and the West: Universal or Relative to Culture?
Assessment

Learners will be assessed via the presentation of a facilitation plan and written plan outline, as well as a 1,250-1,500 word essay.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old at course commencement.
