The Carlow Art Collection and Carlow College warmly invite you to the launch of Mary Stratton Ryan’s new book ‘The Irresistible Frank O’Meara – An Irish Artist in France’.
Frank O’Meara (1853-1888) was born on Dublin Street, Carlow. He trained in Paris, before becoming a central figure in the artists’ colony of Grez-sur-Loing, 70 km south of the City. He was a founder of the Grez school of painting, and he taught and encouraged other artists in the style of painting that he had skilfully developed. Although his life was short, and in the end he struggled with ill-health, he produced a series of wonderful paintings which combine plein-air naturalism with a symbolist mood, and he reached a high degree of excellence in his work. His work is represented in museums Nationally and Internationally. A selection of sketches by Frank O’Meara from The Carlow Art Collection will be on exhibition in Carlow College on the night.
Mary Stratton Ryan, an artist and art historian was also born in Dublin Street. She has spent many years researching O’Meara. “The Irresistible Frank O’Meara” published with Gandon Editions, is a beautiful hardback book full of images and detail of O’Meara’s life and times. Mary will sign copies of her book (€20 on the night), and she will give a talk on Frank O’Meara’s Carlow connections at 7pm in Cobden Hall.
