CfP: ‘The Diaspora and the Irish Revolution, 1916-1923’

Carlow College, St Patrick’s invites papers and panel proposals from a range of disciplinary perspectives on the theme of ‘The Diaspora and the Irish Revolution, 1916-1923’ for a virtual one-day conference being held on 11 June 2021. As the Decade of Centenaries draws to a close, it is fitting to consider the role played by the Irish Diaspora during the Irish Revolutionary period and examine the impact that Irish emigrants and/or their descendants had on events in Ireland during this time.

The Irish diaspora, unlike the majority of other European diasporas at the turn of the twentieth century, maintained a strong link with the homeland. This connection with home facilitated, encouraged and directly influenced revolutionary activity in Ireland. All facets of the intersections between the diaspora and the Irish revolutionary period are eligible for exploration. Topics may include but are not limited to:

• Ideologies and the diaspora (nationalism, unionism, republicanism, imperialism etc.)
• Gender, diaspora and revolution
• Diasporic interventions – fundraising, military support/experience etc.
• Transnational links and networks between the diaspora and the homeland
• The diaspora, the international press and the revolution
• International perspectives of the Irish revolution

Proposals comprising a 250-word abstract and brief biographical note should be sent to the webinar conveners, Dr Regina Donlon (rdonlon@carlowcollege.ie) and Dr Elaine Callinan (ecallinan@carlowcollege.ie) on or before 2 April 2021.
