Carlow College, St Patrick’s has strong tradition of celebrating International Women’s Day, this year’s world wide theme is #BalanceforBetter, building a gender-balanced world.  One of our events commemorates the achievements of Countess Constance Markievicz.

A century ago Countess Markievicz became the first female Cabinet member in the world following her appointment as Minister for Labour. At a short ceremony today College President, Fr Conn Ó Maoldhomhnaigh officially renamed the College Board Room the ‘Constance Markievicz Room’.

The recognition of gender equality and the position of women in Ireland has relevance to all aspects of Irish society both in the public and private spheres. Countess Constance Markievicz is remembered as a woman of determination, independence and idealism in the pursuit of freedom for Irish people.   Speaking at the event Fr Conn remarked ‘In naming the Constance Markievicz Room we will ensure that the achievements of Countess Markievicz will continue to inspire the staff and students of Carlow College, St Patrick’s.’
