Guided Tree Walk for National Tree Week

Carlow College, St. Patrick’s hosted a special guided Tree Walk on campus this week to celebrate National Tree Week 2026, inviting students, staff, and members of the local community to explore the rich natural heritage of the College grounds.

The event was coordinated by the College’s Sustainability Group and led by Head Groundskeeper, Larry O’Toole led participants through the historic grounds, where they learned about the variety of native and non-native tree species, the ecological role each plays, and the importance of conservation in urban green spaces.

Along the route, Larry highlighted the cultural and historical significance of some of the College’s oldest trees, several of which have been part of the Carlow landscape for generations – including our Papal Oak Tree which has grown from a sapling blessed by Pope John Paul II during his visit in 1979. Attendees were also encouraged to reflect on the broader theme of National Tree Week: celebrating the power of trees to support climate action, wellbeing, and community resilience.

The event drew an enthusiastic response, reinforcing the College’s dedication to environmental education and sustainability-led initiatives. The College’s Sustainability Group plans to expand similar activities throughout the year to further engage the campus community in ecological stewardship.
