Biography

Dr. Anthony Barron has previously worked at University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin.
His commitment to promoting a public understanding of the history of ideas inspired his decision to form the Waterford Philosophical Society in 2005. Since then he has delivered weekly lectures on a diverse range of literary and intellectual topics to the members of that group. In 2011 he arranged the inaugural series of Bloomsday events in Waterford. Owing to his efforts, Bloomsday has been celebrated in Waterford on an annual basis since that year.

Research Interest

Anthony’s research interests are interdisciplinary in nature and span a wide range of areas within and between Philosophy, English Literature and Theology. He has a particular passion for examining the means by which the history of ideas interrelates with the world of the arts.

Publications

Anthony’s book, entitled Against Reason: Schopenhauer, Beckett and the Aesthetics of Irreducibility, was published by ibidem-Verlag in conjunction with Columbia University Press in 2017. This work identifies and explores numerous intertextual relationships between the philosophy of Schopenhauer and the forms and themes of Beckett’s critical and creative writings.
Anthony’s article, entitled ‘An Agon with the Twilighters: Samuel Beckett and the Primacy of the Aesthetic’, appeared in the Irish University Review in May 2012.
