Pathway to Third Level
I completed my Leaving Cert in 1990 and then went and did a secretarial course but didn’t like it. I went into a career in the civil service and my son was in college so my life was steady. However, my life was turned upside down when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. This made be reconsider what I wanted to do, so I decided to look at alternative options and pursue something that I was truly interested in.Â
Being from Carlow, I was well aware of the college, liked the inclusivity of it and the size. I was attracted to the English & History programme as I loved literature and reading.
Experience as a student
When starting my degree, she initially wanted to go into teaching but now I’m considering all sort of career options such as postgraduate, research or archives.Â
At the start, it was difficult as I started during COVID so all classes were online. I studied part-time at first, but felt disjointed. However, in my second year I found a wonderful group of students and decided to transfer to full-time study. We have a fantastic group now.Â
Academically, I find it perfect, going into final year next year so it comes around quick.Â
Socially, I met a really nice group of people in English & History and enjoy their company. We all get along chatting and listening to the changing stories of the day. It’s an all-around positive experience studying in Carlow College.Â
What have you discovered since starting your degree?
I have discovered that IÂ still have to do a mind map as an assignment in third year! Everything is as I thought it would be otherwise, but now I have a much better approach to assessments.Â
I have also developed an increasing interest in History, which has surprised me a little.
What do you say to prospective Mature students?
DO IT!Â
It is a great course, with a broad range of history that goes through a wide range of eras and countries. With English, there is the usual mix of classical and contemporary, so there’s something for everyone.Â
