Over 50 Transition Year students were hosted by Carlow College this week to undertake the Foróige Leadership For Life programme, delivered by staff and students of Carlow College.
Students from St. Leo’s College, Borris Vocational School, Knockbeg College, Tyndall College, Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach, Coláiste Lorcáin, Castledermot and Portlaoise College spent five days on campus taking part in the programme. The Leadership for Life programme sets out to empower young people to make a positive difference to their community through practical actions and projects.
Over the course of the week, students learned the core concepts of leadership and gained skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, self-awareness etc. The programme sets about developing the leadership capabilities and potential of young people and gives them an opportunity to harness their skills and attributes to contribute to their society in a fun and encouraging environment.
Foróige is delighted to bring the Leadership for Life programme to the young people of Carlow. We are extremely proud of this programme and the benefits it gives young people.
Rosie O'Brien, Club Promotion & Training Resources Officer for Foróige
“The Leadership for Life Programme is a once in a lifetime opportunity for young people to acquire leadership skills that will guide them through life. They come away from the programme with skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, empathy, resilience, self-reflection and teamwork. These skills are vital for young people’s future.”, continued Rosie.
Students and staff of Carlow College completed specialised training to facilitate the programme over the week. Carlow College Vice President, Dr Eric Derr, noted: “The Leadership for Life Programme is not only a tremendous opportunity for Transition Year students to acquire leadership skills, but also a valuable opportunity for our students to develop key employability skills and put those directly into practice. Many of our students go onto careers in working with youth, whether that be through social care, teaching, psychology or community work.”
Dr Derr continues: “I extend my congratulations to all the participants who dedicated themselves to understanding what it takes to become effective leaders and how to use these skills for the betterment of society.”
All students received a Foróige Certificate of Achievement at a presentation ceremony on Friday, 19th January.
