Visiting Professor from Walsh University to deliver Public Lecture

Carlow College is delighted to welcome Associate Professor Rachel Constance, visiting academic from Walsh University, Ohio for a public lecture titled “Cholera and the Politics of Prevention in the 19th Century British Empire” on Monday, 16th October at 1.45pm.

Dr. Constance specializes in global history, the intersection of science, technology, and medicine, with a particular emphasis on pandemics and medical networks within the British Empire. Her work also includes contributions to publications like “First World War: A Centennial Assessment” (2018) and the Bulletin of World History (2020).

In this lecture, Dr. Constance will explore the intricate dance between scientific understanding, public awareness, and political will in addressing cholera within the complex landscape of 19th-centre Britain, where the quest for public health collided with entrenched political structures.

Dr. Constance has also spearheaded public history projects, notably an oral history initiative capturing the early experiences of COVID-19 at Walsh University among faculty, staff, and students.
