Carlow College history lecturer Dr Ida Milne, along with Ian d’Alton were delighted to be received by President Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin yesterday.

They presented the President with a copy of their book ‘Protestant and Irish, The Minority’s search for a place in independent Ireland‘. The book is a collection of exploratory essays edited by Ian d’Alton and Ida Milne, and looks at how southern Irish Protestants tried to come to terms with newly-independent Ireland after the state was formed, and how many attempted to fit in and ‘offer a method of living valuable to the State’.

The essays are from various perspectives of Protestant participants in Ireland – such as academics and students, working-class Protestants, revolutionaries, rural women, a landlord, and clerics, and it examines how they adjusted to the new State.
