Why I chose Carlow College

I chose Carlow College for its unique English & History degree which allows students to choose from a range of elective modules in years three and four. I loved the idea of having some choice in my own particular areas of interest. Also, the college’s reputation for being welcoming alongside its high standard of education. The feedback I received from both former and current students was very positive. Every person I spoke to had nothing but praise for the college as both a place of learning, and for its friendly atmosphere. Being a small college students don’t feel lost, they feel valued. The supports that the college offer were very attractive to me. I was an early school leaver so getting back into education was a daunting prospect, but when I realised the various supports offered throughout all of the programs I knew Carlow College was perfect for me.

What I like most about my course

What I like most about my course is the way that both disciplines of English & History marry well together. What I’m studying in History often crosses over into the English modules, allowing me to engage with both disciplines from various viewpoints which is fascinating. It gives a broader, richer, and deeper insight of the various periods of study while also gaining a greater understanding of modern social, cultural, and political concerns. I particularly love the Irish history modules and the contemporary Irish and American literature modules. It is such a privilege to be able to study some of the greatest works of literature while also learning about the tumultuous periods in which they were produced. Who these people were, what motivated them, and why these works is still being read today.

My interaction with Student Supports

Yes, absolutely, student support services are so easy to access and the support I received was fantastic. For example, when I began as a first year I was struggling with an essay so I contacted the Writing Development Tutor who showed me how to engage with the essay question, and other ways I could improve my answer. This is a service I know I can go back to at any stage throughout my degree if I’m struggling with a particular essay.

Why I recommend Carlow College

I couldn’t imagine studying anywhere else to be honest. I love learning in a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment. I have met some amazing people here and made some solid friendships which I foresee lasting a lifetime.

All of the lecturers are so approachable and accommodating and are always very supportive. They want you to succeed, encouraging you to hone and develop your skills. They always have time to answer any questions, and respond to emails. Lecturers and students get to know each other on a first name bases which makes the learning experience more personal and student focused.
