The staff and students of Carlow College, St Patrick’s are calling on the Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan to review the deportation case of Michael Usiku. Allowing him complete his degree in Social, Political and Community studies with us.
Michael’s experience of pursuing an education in Ireland since 2014 has been expensive, frustrating, and personally challenging. Through no fault of Michael’s, two colleges that Michael attended and paid fees for, were shut down without any warning or compensation. He has suffered emotionally and financially.
Carlow College, St Patrick’s has a strong history of fighting social injustice particularly within the degree Michael is studying. This campaign was started by his lecturer Stephanie McDermott who is currently at the International Court of Justice, The Hague to witness the beginning of the court case where Myanmar is being brought to justice for their genocidal campaign against the Rohingya.
Michael wants to return to his native Malawi to become a community worker with a degree from Carlow College, St Patrick’s, enabling him to better serve his community. We call on the Minister for Justice to allow him to do this.
