Carlow College, St. Patrick’s was delighted to celebrate the graduation of nine students from the Higher Diploma in Politics and Society at the South East Technological University (SETU) conferring ceremony on 27 October. The graduates represent the final cohort of students to complete the programme, bringing the total number of graduates from the programme to 30 over its three-year delivery.
Designed and delivered by Carlow College through a flexible blended learning model, the Higher Diploma in Politics and Society provided students with the opportunity to engage in critical study of politics, society and public affairs while balancing professional and personal commitments. The programme was validated by SETU, which conferred the award.
The conferring ceremony marked both a significant personal achievement for the graduates and the conclusion of a successful programme, which was launched in late 2022, and attracted learners from a wide variety of professional and educational backgrounds over the past three years of delivery.
Programme Director Dr Steph Hanlon attended the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the graduating class.
Speaking following the event, Dr Hanlon said:
“We are immensely proud of the accomplishments of this graduating class. Throughout the programme, students developed the analytical, research and critical thinking skills needed to engage with complex political and social issues. It is particularly meaningful to celebrate this final cohort, whose graduation marks the culmination of a programme that has enriched discussion and understanding of contemporary society for many learners over the years.”
The Higher Diploma in Politics and Society provided students with a comprehensive understanding of political systems, social structures and public policy, encouraging informed engagement with some of the most pressing challenges facing society today and has been a key pathway for post-primary teachers upskilling to teach senior cycle subject, Politics & Society, as well as those interested in careers in politics, human rights and advocacy sectors.
Carlow College President, Fr Conn Ó Maoldhomhnaigh, acknowledged the significant work involved in developing and delivering the programme and its lasting impact on students.
“As the final cohort graduates, Carlow College acknowledges the dedication and contribution of Programme Director, Dr Steph Hanlon and all those who have studied, taught and supported the programme since its inception, and congratulates this year’s graduates on reaching this important milestone.”
