Our historian, Dr. Elaine Callinan, has recently contributed a chapter on the propaganda of the Irish Civil War to the newly released book Violence and Propaganda in European Civil Wars, Dimensions of Conflict, 1917-1949, published by Routledge in March 2025. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the conditions, motives, and practices of violence during civil wars across Europe in the early 20th century, covering conflicts in Russia, Finland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and Greece. Elaine’s chapter focuses specifically on the role of propaganda in the Irish Civil War, exploring its psychological impact and its role in inciting hostility and violence between the pro- and anti-treaty factions in 1922-23.
